The Birstall Citizen of the Year Award isnow in its third year. The Award recognizes and applauds the often unseen work of the many good citizens of the Village. It was the idea of Parish Council Chairman Mr Stuart Jones who said "The idea is to recognise the work of those who usually go unrecognised, not professionals, doctors, teachers, or Councillors who do important wor, but the people who give their time and energy as volunteers to help the community. I hope the award will encourage people to do more for Birstall". All entrants are from nominations sent in by the public. The final decision is down to Mr Jones. The award is presented during the annual two-day Birstall Gala held in July each year.In 2005, the first receipient was Mr Jex Woods of Birstall & Wanlip Age Concern for his tire-less work with Age Concern. The 2006 award went to Mrs Brenda Watts for her work with Friends of Belgrave Cemetery. The 2007 award has just been presented to Mr Andy Corbett for his work with the Juniors at Birstall Village Cricket Club.
