2nd year students studying for a BA (Hons) Printed Textile Design at Loughborough University School of Art & Design, were given an open brief to design a piece of artwork in any creative form, to be displayed across three panels of the ceiling area.
To assist in interpreting the brief, students were given a presentation on the history, company values, business focus and products of 3M Health Care, the opportunity to photograph the facility and samples of the materials and paint colours being used in the refurbishment.
Designs by 28 students were assessed by a panel of judges and6 short-listed entries selected. Each short listed entrant was given a small development budget to refine their proposal and were invited to personally present their design concept to the judging panel.
The winners of the 2006 3M Design Award and two Highly Commended entries were announced at a presentation evening attended by The Worshipful The Mayor of Charnwood and the Mayoress, winning ?500 and ?250 respectively.
3M Health Care financed the production of the winning design which is now installed in the ceiling area of the restaurant. The 3M Design Award successfully provided the opportunity for LUSAD students to work on a real-life design project, understanding and interpreting client requirements and overcoming challenges posed by the environment. The winning artwork has made a unique and memorable contribution to 3M’s staff restaurant, enhancing the environment and providing a talking point for employees and visitors.
