Acquisitive Crime and Drugs Misuse

Domestic Burglary is a priority because of its high impact on Charnwood’s overall crime figures and it represents 7% of all recorded offences for 2008/2009. Although improvements are being made Charnwood has proportionately high rates of burglary when compared against our Audit Commission family group of authorities. Student households within Loughborough are particularly susceptible.

Burglary Other then Dwelling saw an increase of 24% but still only accounts for 8% of all recorded crime in Charnwood Borough in 2008/2009.

Vehicle crime (which includes Theft from Motor Vehicle, Theft of Motor Vehicle, taken without consent and Vehicle Interference) accounts for 10% of recorded offences within the Borough.

Theft of Cycle makes up only a small proportion of our overall recorded crime but is much higher than comparator areas. The significant student population in Loughborough is a factor. This comparatively “low level” crime can also be an early indicator of the more serious acquisitive crime and contributes to undermining public confidence in the safety of the area.

Drugs misuse is a priority because of the suffering it causes both to the victims and the community. Acquisitive crime is largely driven by this misuse. The problematic drug user rate per 100,000 population in Charnwood is the highest out of all the Leicestershire Districts.
