Violent Crime and Night Time Economy

Violence against the person offences account for 22% of all recorded offences in Charnwood in 2008/2009. Over one fifth of the Borough’s violent offences were recorded in a 1km area of Loughborough Town Centre. Domestic abuse is a particularly prevalent and damaging crime which affects a wide range of individuals irrelevant of gender, age, ethnicity, class, religion, sexuality, geography and lifestyle. Recorded domestic violent incidents account for 8% of all recorded crime within Leicestershire during 2008/2009.

The strategy, “Violence against women and girls” represents an integrated approach to end all forms of violence against women and girls and has been informed by an extensive public consultation. The strategy has a number of actions under the framework of prevent violence, provide support and protect victims 

The misuse of alcohol can have a significant impact on individuals, families and communities. Alcohol misuse has adverse consequences, contributing to social problems, economic cost, health problems and crime. Compared to all other victims, victims of reported domestic abuse in Leicestershire are more likely to be victim to a perpetrator under the influence of alcohol 29% compared to 5%

Aim

  • Victims of Domestic Violence are better protected from further offending 
  • Reduce levels of violent crime in identified hotspots
  • Reduce alcohol related violence and anti-social behaviour
  • People feel and are safer from violence, in particular in town centre locations in the evenings and at night
  • Increase confidence to report incidents of crimes against person, in particular hate related crimes
  • To carry out targeted work to reduce alcohol related violence in Loughborough town centre
  • Reduce the harm caused to the health and well being of those who misuse
  • Utilise powers made available via the licensing act to control licensed premises
  • To contribute towards the County Road Safety Partnership targets in relation to safer roads
  • To contribute towards a County wide Alcohol Strategy that will enable actions to be put in place to address the consequences of alcohol misuse
